Cowgirl tennis set to open MWC play in San Jose

LARAMIE -- After a three-week layoff, the Wyoming tennis team is ready to get back on the courts as the Cowgirls will see their first Mountain West action in nearly two years as conference play begins this weekend at San Jose State.

UW will face the host-Spartans at 1 p.m., Friday and will face-off with Colorado State also at 1 p.m., Saturday in San Jose. The last time the Cowgirls played in league play was in 2019, where they went 3-2 on the MW season.

Wyoming (6-4) is coming off a pair of 7-0 sweeps in its 2021 home opener against Weber State, March 5 and 6 in its last action. The Cowgirls didn’t lose a set in the March 5 victory over WSU and only lost one doubles match in the Saturday victory.

For her perfect 4-0 weekend, going 2-0 in both singles and doubles play, Sophie Zehender was named the Mountain West’s Female Tennis Athlete of the Week on March 10. It was the second such honor for Zehender this season.

On the season, Zehender leads the Cowgirls with seven victories in singles play and along with partner Ana Fernandez, his 8-1 playing mostly at the No. 2 spot. Noesjka Brink has the Cowgirls’ best winning percentage in singles play so far this season, sporting a 5-2 (.714) mark.

Overall as a team, Wyoming is an even 30-30 in singles matches in 2021 and has an impressive 20-9 mark in doubles play (69 percent).

The Spartans present a tall order for the Cowgirls as they enter Friday’s contest with a perfect 7-0 record this season, with three of those wins coming at home. CSU, meanwhile, has played just four matches and is 1-3 and 0-1 in neutral site matches.
