Despite an hour-and-a-half weather delay, a record number of people watched the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds scream across the skies above Laramie County Community College for the last time Wednesday.

"We had 18,876 spectators out there for the air show, which is an all-time record," said Col. Matt Dillow, Cheyenne Frontier Days Military Chairman.

For a while it looked this year's performance was going to be a repeat of last year's air show -- which was grounded due to the weather -- but luckily the clouds broke and the Thunderbirds were able to shine with their thrilling aerial acrobatics.

"Last year was a big disappointment," said Col. Dillow. "The volunteers did an outstanding job preparing for and executing that air show, but the weather just didn't cooperate. So we were really excited the Thunderbirds were able to fly (this year)."

Col. Dillow says the record-setting crowd was also a fitting tribute to the Thunderbirds roughly 20-year partnership with LCCC.

"Laramie County Community College has been an outstanding host," said Col. Dillow. "But they did some development of the land around the college and we've got to work to find a new location."

"I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll find a way to bring the air show back to F.E. Warren Air Force Base in 2019," he added.
