RAWLINS, Wyo. (AP) — A proposed large wind farm project in Carbon County has cleared another regulatory hurdle.

The Carbon County Commission voted 3-0 Tuesday to grant a conditional use permit to the Power Company of Wyoming for the Chokecherry and Sierra Madre wind farm project.

The commission heard testimony from people both for and against the project before approving it.

The project entails erecting about 1,000 wind turbines across some 229,000 acres of public and private land on two sites south of Rawlins. It is expected to generate enough power for up to 1 million homes.

The Associated Press reports that pending state approval, current construction is planned to begin in 2013.

Next, the project will need a permit from the state’s Industrial Siting Council.
