Former University of Wyoming Cowgirl Becky Stewart is the new head coach of the Laramie Lady Plainsmen volleyball program.

The two-time All-Mountain West selection at libero takes over for Jill Stucky who resigned in March. Laramie High School Athletics Director Bruce Schmidt made the announcement Monday afternoon.

Stewart's hiring is pending approval by the Albany County School Board at their next meeting May 13.

KOWB spoke with Stewart Monday afternoon. To be the new head coach at Laramie High School, Stewart said,

"It is a really exciting feeling. I have been coaching since my junior year of high school, and I just always loved it. So, the fact that I finally get this opportunity in a community I love, I'm just so excited."

She also says having just finished playing is a huge benefit to me.

"I know how certain coaching strategies and certain things coaches do can come across to players." She says it will affect how she ends up coaching.

"I do know what kind of stuff girls are motivated by, and what kind of stuff they need to hear because I was there myself. I think that's a huge advantage for me."

Stewart was a four-year letter winner from 2010-2013. She is the Cowgirls all-time leader in career digs with 1,683. She also holds the single-season record of 624 established in 2013. Stewart played in 118 career matches and was a three-time all-tournament team selection. She was the MVP of the 2012 Uni-Wyo Wyoming Invite.

Her focus also carried over in the classroom. Stewart was a four-time Academic All-Mountain West and Mountain West Scholar-Athlete award recipient.

Schmidt said in the press release, "Rebecca (Becky) will bring enthusiasm and energy to the volleyball program and will keep developing our student-athletes and their volleyball skills. Her leadership and confidence will motivate the volleyball program to the best that they can be."

As for Stewart's coaching style, she admitted that will be determined by what type of squad she'll have. She said being a defensive-oriented person, she'll want a strong defensive team.

A 2010 graduate of Ponderosa High School in Parker, CO. She helped her team to the Colorado Class 5A State Championship in 2009. She was second Team All-Conference her senior season and a two-time letter winner. She was also named co-MVP by her team.

You can hear more from the new Laramie Lady Plainsmen head volleyball coach Tuesday morning, as Stewart will be a guest during 'Laramie Live on KOWB' at 8:10 a.m.
