Laramie Majors All-Stars are Excited for the District Tournament

The Wyoming Little League Baseball Postseason begins on Monday for the Laramie Majors All-Stars, as they host the District 2 Little League District Tournament from July 15 through July 20, 2024, on Green Field at the Laramie Youth Baseball Complex off Armory Road. The goal is to finish as one of the top two teams and qualify for the state tournament later this month in Douglas.

Laramie fell in last year’s state title game, and it’s been eight years since a Laramie team won the Majors state title and went to California. Still, there’s plenty of history and tradition within Laramie Youth Baseball, and Majors manager Aaron Voos says it doesn’t add pressure, it adds privilege.

“It’s awesome to be able to coach the Laramie team. Like you said, there’s such a tradition of success, and there’s so many people who have such great memories of it. To be able to be part of a community that supports that and continues to support it… it’s definitely a privilege to be able to coach for the community of Laramie.”

In addition to those seven players, the rest of the roster features Jameson Ver Ploeg, Zane Vogel, Will Cherrington, Liam Biggs, and Kaleb Strain.

Laramie has its first game versus Platte Valley at 11 a.m. on Monday. The other teams in the tournament are Rawlins, Gillette, Torrington, Douglas, and Platte County. It’s a double-elimination tournament, and the championship game is at 11 a.m. on July 20.

Voos is hoping they can take advantage of their home field. Besides knowing the field and sleeping in their beds, Voos is hoping the crowds can help Laramie.

“Hopefully, friends, family, etcetera, can come out and watch them. It does make a difference. When you’ve got a bunch of people cheering for you, baseball’s a game of momentum, and so when things are going well, and you’ve got a large crowd cheering for you, it sure helps.”

Voos loved that they got some games in before the District Tournament to help the team learn about each other, work on game situations, and more. For them to be successful, Voos feels they have to be consistent with defense and pitching.

“Those are the areas we’re trying to focus on. We have a really strong team, as far as pitching goes, very strong. Every single kid out of 12 can pitch, and that’s really unique to this team. We have to focus on leaning on our strengths. We’ll clean up some weaknesses, but we have to play to our strengths.”

The winner of Laramie-Platte Valley will play Rawlins on Tuesday at 11 a.m. The other first-round games are Gillette versus Torrington (1 p.m.) and Douglas against Platte County (3 p.m.) on Monday. The opening ceremonies is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Monday. Teams only play one game per day.
