The University of Wyoming's Art Museum and Visual Arts building will host a variety of art exhibits from now through May.

The exhibits will focus on a variety of topics, including slavery, illustrations, and the apocalypse.

Artist Kara Walker's exhibit "Emancipating the Past: Kara Walker's Tales of Slavery and Power" is currently on display and will continue to run through May 14. The exhibit includes art from different mediums, including paper, video, wall painting and sculpture.

Art Collector Jordan Schnitzer will lead a gallery walk-through of the exhibit on February 2 at 3:30 p.m., followed by a panel discussion with University of Wyoming faculty at 5 p.m.

Of Walker's exhibit, Schnitzer says "Kara Walker is the pre-eminent artist of our time who forces us to deal with issues that many people would rather not deal with. Her art needs to be seen, and the themes need to be examined."

Also featured in the Art Museum is a gallery called "The Harper's Weekly Illustrations: Winslow Homer's Americana." The gallery pulls artwork from artist Winslow Homer's early work and help provide a glimpse at life in 19th century America.

Photographer Lori Nix's collection "The City" will be displayed in the Visual Arts building until March 25. Inspired by exposure to young adult dystopian stories and the destructive powers of Mother Nature, Nix created and photographed a series of dioramas depicting urban scenes of the apocalypse.
