University of Wyoming head football coach Dave Christensen confirmed on Friday what the social media world had already revealed, that freshman quarterback Brett Smith did undergo surgery on Thursday of this week.

"Brett had surgery Thursday," said Christensen. "The surgery went well, and we expect Brett to be back during spring ball."

Wyoming does not discuss details of injuries or surgeries. Through the Twitter account that Smith keeps (@bsmithwyo16), it seems as though surgery on his throwing hand took place in his hometown of Salem, Ore. following an evaluation in mid-January.

Late in the season, Smith began wearing gloves during games. On Jan 18th, he indicated on Twitter that it may have been due to pain when he threw the ball.

Later that same day, Smith took to Twitter again, this time making mention of an MRI.

While the exact surgery remains unknown, it seems pretty clear from a discussion on Twitter with teammate Dominic Rufran (@DomRufran) that Smith's hand was operated on.

Smith was the Mountain West Freshman of the Year in 2011. He started all 13 games his true freshman season, throwing for 2,622 yards and accounting for 3,332 yards of total offense. He ranked No. 2 in the Mountain West and No. 33 in the nation in total offense.

Spring practice for the Pokes will begin on Monday, March 19 and will run through the spring game on Saturday, April 21.
