The first meeting of the 2022-23 school year for the Wyoming High School Activities Association Board of Directors produced some small changes.

The Board approved on final reading the adjustment of first-round playoff game times in football from 7 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Other motions that passed included approval of Fort Washakie school to play varsity volleyball and girls’ basketball starting in the 2023-24 school year, and Powell was approved to field their own indoor track and field team starting this upcoming winter for 2022-23. The Panthers will compete in Class 1A/2A/3A.

The WHSAA Board also made adjustments in track and field. Starting this year, for both indoor and outdoor seasons, all high jump competitions will begin at an even-inch height, and every pole vault competition will start at a 0-inch or 6-inch height. In the pole vault, starting with the 2022-23 regional and state events, when four or fewer competitors remain, the bar will be raised in 3” increments.

Three items passed on “first reading” at the board meeting.

Those included a proposal to limit all entries to four individuals per event, which would allow the indoor shot put to be the same as its outdoor competition.

Another proposal that got approval on its first reading was a motion that would allow 14 players to be in uniform for any volleyball tournament contest.

The last proposal passed on first reading was put forth to allow golfers to participate in two extra events that are non-sanctioned events, such as a club championship or fundraiser, or a regional tournament. The golfer would be participating on their own and not representing a school. Currently, golfers are limited to ten (10) contest days per season, fall and spring. This proposal has the support of many golf coaches around the state.

Finally, the WHSAA and its Reclass Committee continue discussions for the next cycle, which is 2024-25 and 2025-26. The focus is on enrollment equity, consistency in classifications, and identifying clear and natural breaks. The Committee will present its proposal at the January District Meetings.
