Rock Springs Police are urging people to exercise caution around wild animals and make sure pets have had their rabies shots after a bat found in the city tested positive for rabies.

According to the Rock Springs Police Department Facebook page, the bat was found on the ground in downtown Rock Springs on Sept. 1.

The animal was sent to the state vet lab for testing, and it did test positive for rabies. Police are urging people to not touch bats they see crawling on the ground and to report any suspicious-looking animals to their local animal control office.

Rabies can be spread from infected animals to people, usually by the person being bitten. it is almost always fatal in unvaccinated humans.
