WDE Releases Statewide PAWS Scores

The Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) released the statewide scores for the 2013 Proficiency Assessments for Wyoming Students (PAWS), Wednesday in Cheyenne. The report shows that the 2013 PAWS proficiency rates declined across each grade level and content area compared to the 2012 exam.

Students in grades 3 through 8 are tested in math and reading and students in fourth and eighth grades are also tested in science. State Assessment Director Deb Lindsey says this year's PAWS assessment began a transition in testing new education standards that have been adopted in Wyoming and that may have affected scores.

Lindsey says the 2014 test will be completely revamped to reflect the new, and generally more rigorous standards. Education Department Director Rich Crandall says the higher expectations that come with more rigorous standards will ultimately benefit all Wyoming students.
