Research to help producer livestock and crop decisions and profitability will be offered during an open house Thursday, Aug. 21, at the James C. Hageman Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center (SAREC) near Lingle.

The schedule:

3 p.m. -- Introductions.

3:20 p.m. -- Presentation by animal scientist Doug Landblom of North Dakota State University, “Cost effectiveness of various wintering rations on finishing and profitability of market steers.” Landblom is a beef cattle nutrition and management specialist at the Dickinson Research Extension Center.

4 p.m. -- Three-minute research presentations.

4:30 p.m. -- Research and poster presentations.

5:30 p.m. -- Dinner.

Participants can visit field plots/research of their choice and meet with researchers.

Topics include how cattle self-select their diets; bull feed efficiency update; irrigated crop weed update, weed resistance; wheat variety trial results; range weed research, cheatgrass control with grazing; limited irrigation; high tunnel research: tomatoes, peppers, spinach, carrots and beneficial insects for alfalfa pest control.

Other topics are alternative crops: guar, quinoa, kochia, hops; crop disease research: sugar beets, potatoes; interplanting cover crops in irrigated row crops; updated wind turbine information; and variable rate pivot irrigation.

SAREC, located about two miles southwest of Lingle, has 1,522 acres of dryland cropland, 349 acres of irrigated cropland, 1,880 acres of rangeland, 19 acres of irrigated organic cropland, 40 acres of dryland organic cropland, a feedlot and a livestock research laboratory.
