UWYO.EDU — This is the final week to view three exhibitions at the University of Wyoming Art Museum.

The final day to see the exhibitions, “The Botanical Series: Photographs by Gerald Lang and Jennifer Anne Tucker,” “David Simpson,” and “The John and Pam Finley Collection of African and Folk Art” will be Saturday, Aug. 17. Two new exhibitions will open that day, “Contemporary Kachinas from the UW Art Museum Collection” and works on view in the Pat Guthrie Special Exhibitions Teaching Gallery.

“The Botanical Series: Photographs by Gerald Lang and Jennifer Anne Tucker” combines Tucker's extensive research and practice as an herbalist with Lang's digital processing skills to create extraordinary images made using a scanner and digital printer.

“David Simpson” includes large-scale paintings done by the San Francisco-based artist. Simpson applies as many as 30 layers of paint to his specially prepared canvases. Through the use of interference paints to create his color field paintings, the micro-particles of titanium oxide and mica create the appearance of shifting colors as the viewer’s perspective changes.

“The John and Pam Finley Collection of African and Folk Art” presents the first exhibition drawn from the objects in this new collection at the Art Museum. The exhibition includes both African objects and folk art from the New Orleans area that are presented from an aesthetic rather than cultural perspective, reminiscent of the collector’s intent in acquiring the objects.

“Contemporary Kachinas from the UW Art Museum Collection” presents a selection of works gifted to the Art Museum from the James R. Nolan Collection. Based on the Navajo creation tales, which are an essential part of Native American culture, animals play a dominant role. The artists use the kachinas to recreate the lessons taught through these myths and use animals, in humanistic forms and upright positions, to illustrate the strong connection between humans and animals.

Building on the success of the pilot program, the Art Museum will continue the Pat Guthrie Special Exhibitions Teaching Gallery for the 2013 fall semester. Works of art, selected with faculty from the departments of Art and History and from the Honors Program, are installed and available to students throughout the semester for use during the museum’s public hours.
