The United States Postal Service is still working on ways to reduce their financial deficit. Members of Congressional committees as well as the House Appropriations  committee, which Lummis is part of received letters from the U.S. Postal Service asking to support changes being made.

The United States Postal Services is facing major budget cuts which in turn have lead to talks of closing several rural post offices across Wyoming. Not only will a number of post offices be closed but the postal services is talking about eliminating Saturday deliveries. A move like that could save approximately $3.1 billion a year.

Another proposal is to change a law so the postal service would no longer have to make annual payments in excess of $5 billion for advanced contributions to future retiree medical costs.

Last year the United States Postal Service had a deficit of $8 billion. The deficit was caused in part by combined effects of the recession and transitioning between mail business and the internet.
