A Laramie man accused of murdering his step-grandmother pleaded guilty in Albany County District Court Tuesday.

Trevor Lee Sanford changed his plea after initially pleading not guilty to first degree murder in the March killing of 75-year old Marilyn “Kay” Dlugosh.

Prosecutor Kurt Britzius said in exchange for his guilty plea to the first alternative charge of murder in the first degree, the state will dismiss the second alternative charge of felony murder and would not seek the death penalty in Sanford’s case.

Defense attorney Randy Hiller said the defense would argue for life in prison rather than life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Sanford is accused of killing Dlugosh and then taking her car, cell phone and credit cards. Dlugosh’s body was found in her home on March 29. Sanford had been living with Dlugosh since March 23, after he was released from the Albany County Detention Center after being incarcerated for leading law enforcement on a high speed chase in January.

Britzius said the phones were disconnected in Dlugosh’s home prior to her death and that Sanford was angry with his step-grandmother for not answering his phone calls while he was incarcerated at the Albany County Detention Center.

District Court Judge Tori Kricken said Sanford’s sentencing will be scheduled upon completion of a pre-sentence investigation, in about 80 to 90 days.
