On this day back in 1961, John F. Kennedy was inaugurated as the 35th President of the United States. In his inaugural address he declared, "Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty."

In 1801, Secretary of State John Marshall was nominated by President John Adams to be Chief Justice of the United States. John Marshall was then sworn in on February 4th, 1801.

The year was 1942 and on this day, Nazi officials held the notorious Wannsee conference, during which they arrived at their "final solution" that called for exterminating Jews.
