Severe Storms A Concern For Southeast Wyoming Through Monday

The National Weather Service office in Cheyenne has issued a severe storm warning for southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle through Monday.

Severe thunderstorms, large hail, local flooding, 70 mph winds and even a couple of tornadoes are all possible with this storm. Rebecca Mazur of the weather service issues the following warning on Sunday morning:

Sunday: Confidence is low-medium for severe storms today, with the main threat being large hail, strong winds and heavy rain/localized flooding. The tornado threat is low, but can't rule out an isolated tornado mainly between the Laramie Range and the I-25 corridor from Wheatland to Cheyenne. A secondary location for potential tornadoes is western Converse County.

Storms should develop over the Laramie Range by mid-afternoon, with storms tracking to the northeast between 5-10pm or so.

Monday: Confidence is medium for severe storms on Monday as a very strong low -pressure system tracks over the Rockies. The best chance for severe weather will be over southeast Wyoming from just west of the Laramie Range eastward in the afternoon and evening, and then in the Nebraska Panhandle during the evening. Storms should quickly end from west to east by midnight as a strong cold front blasts eastward.

NOTE: A broad area of cloud cover is expected to be overhead in the morning and early afternoon, and the rate at which this cloud cover dissipates will determine the coverage and intensity of storms in the later afternoon and evening. That is why confidence is only medium at this point.

Large hail to 2", a couple of tornadoes, heavy rain with higher potential for flash flooding, and strong winds are all possible with the storms that develop on Monday.
