Sargent and Workman Take Titles at Wyoming State Am
Two University of Wyoming golfers won the Wyoming State Golf Association’s (WSGA) State Amateur Championship at Jacoby Golf Course last weekend.
Senior Glenn Workman and sophomore Erin Sargent topped their respective fields with wire-to-wire wins in the championship flight of the 95th edition of the Wyoming State Am.
Workman finished at 10-under par (203) for a one stroke win over teammate Quintin Pope and two shots better than teammate John Murdock IV. Workman had eight birdies in each of his first two rounds, but came back with just two in the final round and had to hold on. He had rounds of seven-under, 64, and six-under, 65, before a final round 74, or three-over par.
Sargent posted a seven shot victory over former UW teammate Mackenzie Barrie. She came in with an even-par total of 216. She had three birdies and four bogies in both the first and second rounds, but came back with a two-under par, 70, in the final round. Sunday included an eagle on the par-5, 14th.
Fellow Cowgirl and junior Megan Knadler tied for third with Ali Mulhali at 10-over par.
The women’s first flight champion was Mason Jacobson. The second flight was won by Annalyse Johnson. Nicole Klungness won the third flight, while the fourth flight was captured by Sue Blyth.
On the men’s side, John McGinley and Carson Walker tied for top honors in the first flight. Kyle Lathrop won flight two, Scott Walker took the top honors in flight three and Jay Cole won flight four.
In the women’s net division, Mulhali won the crown thanks to her handicap and a final score of five-under par. The men’s net division was won by Scott Bates of Cheyenne by two strokes at six-under par.
Jacoby Golf Course will host the WSGA’s Junior Tournament Wednesday and Thursday. The Laramie Open is July 15 and 16.
