UNDATED (AP) — A much-anticipated pitching matchup between Yu Darvish and Justin Verlander didn't live up to expectations.

Darvish allowed three early runs before Verlander was chased during a seven-run third inning that sent the Texas Rangers to a 10-4 win over Detroit. Verlander was pulled following a pair of bases-loaded walks, Mitch Moreland's two-run double and Geovany Soto's (SOH'-tohz) three-run homer, which put the Rangers ahead 8-3.

Darvish surrendered solo homers by Don Kelly and Jhonny Peralta (peh-RAHL'-tah) while yielding four runs and seven hits in eight innings.

Moreland had two hits and three RBIs for the Rangers, who own the majors' best record at 27-14

Also in the majors, Hector Noesi (noh-EH'-see) pitched into the fifth inning in place of Aaron Harang as Seattle beat the New York Yankees 3-2 . Michael Morse hit a solo homer and scored on Dustin Ackley's RBI single.

Will Middlebrooks laced a three-run double off Fernando Rodney with two out in the ninth inning to give Boston a 4-3 comeback win over Tampa Bay. The rally ruined a fine outing by Alex Cobb, who limited the Red Sox to a run and three hits over 6 1/3 innings.

Chicago took advantage of a run-scoring wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk while putting together a three-run eighth in a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels. The White Sox rallied after Albert Pujols (POO'-hohlz) hit a two-run homer and Howie Kendrick added a two-run double to put the Angels ahead 4-2.

Stephen Strasburg allowed one earned run and three hits in a career-high eight innings as Washington beat the Padres 6-2 in San Diego. Bryce Harper and Adam LaRoche homered to help Strasburg earn a victory in his hometown.

Matt Cain improved to 3-2 despite spotting Colorado a 6-0 lead in the third inning of San Francisco's 8-6 win over the Rockies. Angel Pagan's two-run double broke a 6-6 tie in the seventh after Brandon Crawford's three-run double capped the Giants' five-run fourth.

The Reds blew a 2-1 lead in the ninth before scoring three times in the 10th inning to beat Miami 5-3. Brandon Phillips hit a solo homer and broke a 2-2 with a sacrifice fly in the 10th before Jay Bruce laced a two-run double.

Travis Snider went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and three RBIs as the Bucs hammered Milwaukee 7-1. Francisco Liriano limited the Brewers to a run and six hits while striking out seven in 5 2/3 innings.

The Cardinals lost for just the third time in 15 games as David Wright drove in two runs and Daniel Murphy went 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in the New York Mets' 5-2 win at St. Louis. Jonathon Niese (nees) went a season-high 7 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and six hits to help the Mets end a six-game losing streak and avoid a four-game sweep.

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Yankees have suffered yet another injury.

Lefty Andy Pettitte injured a back muscle before leaving Thursday's game against Seattle in the fifth inning. Pettitte struck out Kyle Seager for the second out of the fifth and reached for his right side with his left arm.

The Yankees currently have Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira (the-SHEHR'-uh), Kevin Youkilis (YOO'-kih-lihs), Joba Chamberlain, Ivan Nova (EE'-vahn NOH'-vah) and four others on the DL.

Also in the majors, American League Cy Young Award winner David Price has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by Tampa Bay due to a strained left triceps. This is the first time in Price's career that he has been on the DL. The left-hander departed his start Wednesday night against Boston in the third inning with the injury. Price has struggled this season, going 1-4 with a 5.24 ERA in nine starts.

Rangers right-hander Alexi Ogando has been placed on the 15-day disabled list because of tendinitis in his right biceps. The move came a day after Ogando allowed two runs over six innings in a victory at Oakland. He's 4-2 with a 3.08 ERA.

The Rockies have placed left-hander Jeff Francis on the 15-day disabled list with a left groin strain and designated infielder Reid Brignac for assignment. Colorado also recalled infielder D.J. LeMahieu (leh-MAY'-hyoo) and right-hander Rob Scahill from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos has landed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring, causing Washington to recall catcher Jhonatan Solano from Triple-A Syracuse. Ramos was batting .250 with two home runs and six RBIs in 14 games.

The Astros have called a Friday news conference amid multiple reports that a son of Hall of Fame pitcher and Texas Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan has been chosen to be their next president. Reid Ryan is the CEO of Ryan-Sanders Baseball, which owns the Triple-A Round Rock Express and Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks.

There's a chance there could be a major change in the use of instant replay in Major League Baseball next season. Commissioner Bud Selig (SEE'-lig) and MLB executive vice president Joe Torre said expanded use could occur on all calls other than balls and strikes, although they cannot commit to expanded use for next season.
