Reverand Selected as First Buchanan Lecture Speaker

Another fine Professor at the University of Wyoming will be speaking at a very prestigious event. University of Wyoming Department of English Professor Cedric “Ric” Reverand will be the speaker at the inaugural Buchanan Lecture that honors retiring UW President Tom Buchanan.

Reverand will discuss “Your Useless Liberal Education” at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, in the UW College of Agriculture auditorium.

The lecture was recently established to honor Buchanan, who will retire in June after serving as UW’s 23rd president since 2005. The lecture is delivered annually by one of UW’s most accomplished retiring faculty members.

The lecture offers members of the graduating class, their families and the university community the opportunity to hear a distinguished UW professor distill a life of inquiry, reflection and service into important guidance for successive generations.

The Office of Academic Affairs sponsors the event, selects and provides a cash award to the speaker.

Reverand received his B.A. degree from Yale University, his M.A. from Columbia University and Ph.D. from Cornell University. His area of specialization, in which he has published extensively, is 17th- and 18th-century British literature. Reverand also has been published on architecture, music and painting. His entire professorial career has been at UW, although he has been a visiting fellow at UCLA, Yale University and Clare Hall, located at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

Reverand currently is the general editor of one of the field's major scholarly journals, “Eighteenth-Century Life,” published by Duke University Press.

His UW awards include the Ellbogen Award for Meritorious Teaching; Mortar Board “Top Prof” Award; Pepsi Award for Excellence; and the George Duke Humphrey Distinguished Faculty Award, UW’s highest faculty honor.

For many years, he has served as UW Cultural Programs director -- the university’s visiting performing artists series. In that capacity, Reverand received the Betty Connors Award for Outstanding Service to the Performing Arts in the West. The award was presented by the Western Alliance of Arts Administrators, one of the largest organizations of arts administrators and managers in the United States.
