One Man Dead Following Police Standoff in Glenrock
One man was found dead following a standoff with law enforcement at a house in Glenrock Thursday afternoon.
Commander Matt Waldock of the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation says Glenrock police responded to the house on Thursday afternoon for a report involving a firearm.
Officers arrived, Waldock says, and an elderly gentleman inside the house fired a weapon at police. The Glenrock officers backed off and requested assistance from the Natrona County Sheriff's Office and its Special Response Team.
"Ultimately, we found an elderly male in the house deceased," Waldock says. "It appears that he took his own life."
Waldock emphasized that the cause of death is pending autopsy results.
The Glenrock Independent reports the man who died was 86-year-old Leonard Frederick Wake. Waldock said he was unable to confirm the man's identity.
Glenrock High School and Glenrock Middle School were both put into lockout, as the incident occurred nearby. Normal classroom instruction and school activities continued inside the schools, but perimeter doors were secured and no one was allowed to enter or leave.
A fire broke out at the home at some point during the standoff, according to the newspaper. The origin of the fire remains unclear.
Glenrock police have returned calls seeking comment on the incident.
