Snowmobiles are not banned from Yellowstone National Park yet, but that option is still being considered for the near future. The National Park Service is releasing a recommendation for how many snowmobiles should be allowed in the Park over the winter. A range of options have been discussed and studied about the future use of snowmobiles within the Park.

A possible maximum number of snowmobiles that the Park Service suggests is 720 a day. Another option is that of an outright ban on the machines. The recommendation is scheduled for release some time today and will be followed by more studies and a public comment period.

Yellowstone National Park is the nation's first state park and the debate over snowmobiles has been ongoing for years. Environmentalists are siding with that of banning the machines, while snowmobile manufacturers and enthusiasts hope the use of sleds continue in the Park.

Snowmobiling is a major part of what attracts tourists to the area and Yellowstone National Park may see significant changes if a new rule is not adopted by next winter. If a new rule is not adopted then snowmobiles will be barred from the park until a new rule can be implemented.
