Mountain West Championships Prove Tough for the Cowgirls

The Wyoming Cowgirls had a difficult time at the 2016 Mountain West Women's Golf Championships with a ninth place finish.

The tournament concluded Wednesday in Rancho Mirage, CA, and the Cowgirls finished at 89-over par (953 team score). They shot their best round in the final round with a 19-over par total of 307 Wednesday.

Freshman Kaylee Knadler led the way individually at 35th place in the field of 45 golfers. She came in at 20-over par (236) for the tournament. The next best finish came from sophomore Klara Castillo, who tied for 38th place at 25-over par.

Head coach Josey Stender said in a university release that the team bounced back on day three. She also reflected on a very solid 2015-16 season.

"This is a young group who can take a lot of positives away from this year. We recorded a school record scoring average this season, almost won two events and had multiple personal best scoring averages."

No. 17 UNLV won the nine-team event at 13-over par. The Rebels were nine strokes better than 22nd-ranked San Diego State. UNLV also had the medalist at the MW Championships, as Alexandra Kaui won with a three-round total of four-under par for a five shot victory.
