Leafs Cool Off Ducks – NHL Roundup For Oct. 23rd
UNDATED (AP) — Phil Kessel (KES'-ul) and the Toronto Maple Leafs have put an end to the Anaheim Ducks' seven-game winning streak.
Kessel entered the night with just two goals before registering his fourth career hat trick in the Leafs' 4-2 win over the Ducks. Anaheim led 2-0 until Kessel scored a power-play goal eight minutes into the second period. He also gave the Leafs the lead later in the period and added an insurance goal in the third.
Deon Phaneuf (fah-NOOF') also scored, James van Riemsdyk (van REEMZ'-dyk) had two assists and Jonathan Bernier (BURN'-yay) stopped 23 shots as Toronto ended a two-game skid.
In other NHL action:
— Jonathan Toews (tayvz) scored once in regulation and once in the shootout as Chicago downed Florida 3-2. The Blackhawks blew a 2-0 lead in the third period before winning for the fifth time in six games.
— Vancouver beat the New York Islanders 5-4 on Brad Richardson's goal at 2:16 of overtime. Daniel Sedin (she-DEEN') and Ryan Kesler each had a goal and an assist to help the Canucks overtime Matt Moulson's two power-play goals for the Islanders.
— James Wisniewski (wihz-NOO'-skee) had a goal and two assists to lead the Columbus offense in a 4-1 win against New Jersey. Sergei Bobrovsky turned away 24 shots as the Blue Jackets dropped the Devils to 1-5-3 this season.
— Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each set up goals by Ladislav Smid and Jeff Petry while Edmonton was scoring four straight times to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 4-3 win at Montreal. Ales Hemsky (AL'-ehsh HEHM'-skee) and Ryan Jones also scored as the Oilers won their second straight since a five-game skid.
— Josh Harding needed to make just 16 saves in his first shutout of the season and eighth of his career to lead Minnesota's 2-0 victory over Nashville. Justin Fontaine notched the tiebreaking goal late in the second period before Jason Pominville added an empty netter.
— Martin Erat (EE'-rat) scored the deciding shootout goal to lift Washington past Winnipeg 5-4. Alex Ovechkin (oh-VEHCH'-kihn) scored twice for the Capitals, who hit the net on their last four shootout attempts.
— Mike Ribeiro (rih-BEHR'-oh) scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period before Phoenix completed a 4-2 win over Calgary. Ribeiro scored twice and Keith Yandle had two assists for the Coyotes.
