Laramie Amateur Hockey Club’s Allison McElwee was recently selected to play for the Colorado Select Girls U19 AAA Ice Hockey Team.

This club is based out of Littleton, CO and competes nationally and internationally.

McElwee told KOWB’s David Settle about this opportunity and its benefits.

“It’s really exciting because I get a chance to play at a higher level than what I’ve been playing at in Wyoming, so it’s just a really good opportunity. It’ll set me up really well if I want to play in college.”

McElwee, who just completed her junior year at Laramie High School, grew up playing on both the LAHC’s U19 Girls and Coed Outlaw teams. She has also represented Laramie and Wyoming on the state level ‘Team Wyoming’ squads travelling nationally and internationally to represent the Cowboy State.

The Colorado Select team has already begun training in Colorado.

McElwee said they train four times per week on the ice, plus add-in dry land training another four times per week. They also will play 3-on-3 games in practice, which even includes some two-a-day sessions.

“It’s going to focus a lot on technique, and we’re going to be in shape. We’re getting a lot of ice time and touches on the puck. It’s going to be really helpful improving my skills.”

McElwee admitted that it’s a step up from what she’s experienced before.

“It’s a lot faster than what I’ve been playing. Most of the girls that we’ll play against are going to go on to play mostly D-1 hockey, sometimes D-3, but just a lot of really good players.”

The Colorado Select Girls U19 AAA Ice Hockey team will play in their first tournament during July in Boston, MA. McElwee said the schedule will feature one tournament per month, plus there are more games ahead, which includes some home & away with California teams.

McElwee is a three-sport letterwinner at Laramie High School. She ran cross country last fall and is a three-year letterwinner in soccer for the state champion Lady Plainsmen. McElwee did say she plans to return to Laramie next spring.
