Laramie police hope someone will call to confirm whether the dog that bit a woman and her dog are vaccinated after a dog fight Wednesday evening.

A woman told police that a man about 60 years old was walking three dogs on leashes in the 600 block of Mitchell at about 7:30 p.m. when the man's dogs got into a fight with the victim's dogs.

The woman and one of her dogs was bitten as the woman tried to break up the fight, according to a news release from the Laramie Police Department.

The man was walking a light brown German Shepherd, a white wire terrier and another medium-sized dog.

Police hope either the owner of the dogs or someone who has information on the dogs' whereabouts will call the Animal Control Unit at 721-5385 or the non-emergency dispatch line at 721-2526.

Animal bites could expose the victim to rabies, according to the Animal Control Unit, so all bites must be reported immediately. Animal Control hopes to hear from someone who can verify whether the dogs involved in Wednesday's fight are vaccinated.

Police say dogs that don't ordinarily bite humans may do so during a fight or while defending territory. Extreme caution should be used in any attempt to break up a dog fight.

Victims of animal bites should try to identify the specific animal and get the owner's contact information while they are still present so the vaccination status can be confirmed, police say.
