The Laramie Police Department is notifying businesses of a new attempted paycheck scam.

An unnamed Laramie business received a phone call this week from a person claiming to be an employee requesting a change of account form for direct deposit.

The person in question was given an option of completing the form in person or receiving one via email to be filled out and returned. He received the form, completed it, and returned it, successfully having the information changed.

Upon sending a confirmation email to the actual employee's work address, the company realized it was not actually their employee that had requested the form. No transactions were made to the new account in the short time the account change was in place.

The department says for employers to be mindful of the potential for similar scams and to have a confirmation process in place. They suggest employees periodically confirm their financial documents and contact information.
