Laramie High’s Alpine Skiing Team Begins 2023 Season [VIDEO]
The high school Alpine Skiing season is finally here. After six weeks of practice, Laramie High School hosts the first invite of the season on Friday and Saturday.
The Laramie Invite will be at the Snowy Range Ski Area.
They will have a slalom race on Friday and a giant slalom or GS race on Saturday. Both days of competition will be on Sundance Run.
Jasen Mitchell is in his tenth season as the Laramie High School Alpine Skiing head coach.
He admitted to KOWB’s David Settle that it’s been nice to train on more snow this year.
“We got to ski five straight days over the break, which was a lot of practice for us. We went up there (Snowy Range Ski Area) at eight o’clock and didn’t come home until five o’clock, so that was pretty good practice.”
LHS has 27 student-athletes on this year’s squad, but coach Mitchell says it’s a young team with only three seniors. Those three are McCrea Doyle, Jack Drew, and Omar Gardea.
Doyle and Drew joined Settle to chat about the 2023 season outlook, both individually and team-wise.
Mitchell says he has high expectations of Doyle and Drew.
“Those two have been with us since they were freshmen, and they’re looking really good. The other kids on the team have just started this year. They’ve skied a lot in their life, but never really raced before, so it’s really new to most of our team.”
Mitchell added that this first weekend will be a starting point to see what they have as a team.
He also likes the fact that the Laramie Invite is first on the schedule, saying he always picks to go first.
“It’s a lot of work (to host an invite). We’ve been preparing for it the last couple of weeks, and (it takes) a lot of volunteers, calling a lot of people, getting everybody down here, and hopefully, putting on a good race is stressful, so, yeah, hopefully, it goes well.”
Laramie welcomes Cody, Jackson, Kelly Walsh, Natrona County, and Pinedale to town for the two-day invite.
As for the 2023 LHS roster, here are the student-athletes on the team in alphabetical order:
