Despite only competing in four track meets, the Laramie High School track and field team has passed the midpoint of the 2023 season.

Laramie has seen action in Sidney, NE, Fort Collins, CO, Wheatland, and Cheyenne.

Even with limited action, four boys and one girl’s relay team pre-qualify for the state track championships next month in Casper.

Senior Chris Gonzales has made it in the shot put and discus. Senior Meyer Smith is qualified in the 3200 meters. Senior John Rose had made the mark in the high jump, and senior Adrien Calderon is already set to go in the pole vault.

The girls’ 4x100 relay team of Kodi Johnson, Bailey Craven, Kamrie Bingham, and Emily Gardner has made the pre-qualifying time.

Laramie head coach Greg Schabron has been very pleased with the upperclassmen that lead the LHS squads.

“Those that have been around for a while, we’ve got some auto-qualifiers already, which has been nice, especially considering the modifications with weather and training.”

Two of the seniors are throwers, Alex Lewis and Chris Gonzales. Recently, KOWB’s David Settle had a chance to chat with the duo about how their outdoor season is going and what’s ahead.

Schabron was very thankful for the school and transportation adapting to the movement of their schedule this spring and helping them get to the meets they have competed in.

“They’ve done what we needed to, to get the kids that opportunity. It’s helped out.”

Schabron feels the team is starting to gel.

“I think the excitement, I know from the coaching perspective, is coming out with the warmer weather, so we’re excited to get rolling with the second portion of the season.”

Schabron feels the boys’ team is solid across the board, while the girls’ team is younger and less experienced. The goal is to get everyone ready for the regional track meet in Gillette on May 12 and 13, 2023.

“The coaches are starting to do a little bit more technique training. (We’re) slowing gearing up for that last four weeks.”

The weather wiped out any competition last week for LHS. They are set to attend the Natrona County Invitational in Casper, which has moved to Monday, April 24.

The season wraps up with the state track meet in Casper on May 18-20, 2023.
