Online Poll: Wyoming U.S. House Race
Election Day is now less than a week away, and one of the marquee contests in the Cowboy State for Wyoming's lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Four candidates are vying for the seat: Republican Chuck Gray, Democrat Lisa Kinney, Libertarian Shawn Johnson, and Constitutional Party candidate Jeff Haggit.
Current Rep. Harriet Hageman is running for the Senate seat held by the retiring Cynthia Lummis, so there is no incumbent in this race.
Chuck Gray Is Widely Expected To Win
Gray, who is Wyoming's Secretary of State, is widely considered the favorite in ruby-red Wyoming. Wyoming last sent a Democrat to Congress in 1976, when Teno Roncalio of Rock Springs was elected. Wyoming not only rarely sends Democrats to Congress, but it's also rarely even close.
The only real cliffhanger in this century was in 2006, when incumbent Republican Barbara Cubin edged Democrat Gary Trauner by only a little over 1,000 votes, about 0.5 percent But that was atypical. Cubin retired at the end of her term in 2008, and subsequent Democratic candidates have gotten little traction.
Anything other than a Gray victory would be a major upset. But, notably, Gray's prospects were downgraded to a "Likely Republican" victory recently by Inside Elections, which had rated the race as "Solid Republican" earlier in the year.
Critics point to the fact that Gray won the GOP Primary with only 25 percent of the vote in a crowded field. Democrats are also expecting a banner year nationally, with some predicting a "blue wave" in the midterms next week. Whether that will include Wyoming is highly questionable.
