Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis is among a bipartisan group of Senators and Representatives who have sponsored a bill to stop the production of pennies.

This isn't the first time a Senator from Wyoming has tried to put an end to penny production. In 2017 then-Senator Mike Enzi introduced the COINS Act, with the same goal in mind.

Lummis: "Getting Rid Of The Penny Makes Cents!"

On her website, Lummis posted the following comments: “I agree with President Trump that the time has come to fully end production of the penny and save American taxpayers money,” said Lummis. “The fiscal reality is undeniable: the U.S. Mint spends three cents to produce each one-cent coin. With a $36 trillion national debt, we have to implement meaningful opportunities to reduce costs, update our currency system, and codify the elimination of government inefficiencies. It just makes cents!”

President Trump has ordered a halt to penny production. But like any presidential order, that policy could be reversed by a future president.

Needless to say, not everyone agrees with Senator Lummis on the penny issues.

Arguments For Keeping The Penny

In an editorial by Mark Weller on insidesources.com, the author argues that getting rid of the penny will increase prices.  "The penny helps keep high prices in check. The alternative to the penny, rounding prices to the nickel, hurts consumers," Weller wrote.

Weller also claims getting rid of the penny will hurt charity fundraisers. That is because people often donate using pocket change, especially pennies. While donations that small may not seem important, he says cumulatively they add up.to a more money than people might.

So what do you think? Is it time to stop making pennies? Or does keeping the cents make sense?
