A man is behind bars following a high-speed, multi-county car chase and SWAT standoff on Interstate 80 in Wyoming late Friday afternoon, the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office says.

Sheriff's spokesman Deputy Jason Mower says it all started in Uinta County when a Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper stopped 52-year-old Washington resident David Eugene Furman near mile marker 50 east of Lyman.

Mower says when the trooper made contact with Furman, he sped off toward Green River.

"After successfully stopping the vehicle near mile marker 85, west of Green River, Furman, who was traveling with an aggressive dog, barricaded himself inside, refusing to comply with officers and threatening violence against them," Mower said in a media release.

Mower says around 4 p.m., a joint tactical response team made up of deputies from the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Green River and Rock Springs police departments was called out to help.

"During the two-hour standoff, crisis negotiators repeatedly attempted to convince Furman to surrender, but he refused," said Mower.

"At around 5:45 p.m., as the SWAT team prepared to deploy chemical munitions into his vehicle, Furman decided to give himself up and was taken into custody without injury and without further incident," Mower added.

Furman was subsequently booked into the Sweetwater County Detention Center, where he's being held without bond awaiting his initial court appearance.

Mower says further details as to the circumstances prompting the incident have not been released as the case remains under active investigation by the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

He says the dog is safe and was released to family, who was traveling behind Furman by about 20 miles or so when he attempted to elude troopers.
