An airman assigned to F.E. Warren Air Force Base is dead following a Tuesday morning shooting in Fort Collins, the base confirmed early Wednesday.

According to Fort Collins Police Services (FCPS), officers were called to a reported shooting in the 100 block of West Fairway Lane at 2:22 a.m. and arrived to find the airman dead.

FCPS says a second person was taken to an area hospital.

Investigation Underway

"Detectives in the FCPS Crimes Against Persons Unit (CAPU) are investigating the incident and have determined all involved individuals knew each other," FCPS said in a press release Tuesday. "There is no indication of any ongoing threat to the public."

Heartbreaking

"This is a heartbreaking day for the 90th Missile Wing, our deepest sympathies go out to the families and friends of those affected," said Col. Terry Holmes, 90th Missile Wing commander.

"Our focus is on supporting our airmen while fully cooperating with local authorities and OSI as they continue their investigation," Holmes added.

The base says the name of the airman is being withheld until 24 hours after next-of-kin notification, in accordance with Department of Defense policy.

Anyone with information about the shooting who has not already spoken to police is asked to call Detective Cole Giandomenico at 970-221-6558.

Sadly, this is the second airman to be killed in an off-base shooting since Aug. 16.
