Burlington swept the individual championships at the 2A State Cross Country Meet in Cheyenne on Saturday. The Huskies are competing as a stand-alone team as they previously paired up with Rocky Mountain. The boys won a state title last year as a co-op with Rocky and now have a team title all to themselves. Howard McNiven was the individual State Champion and placed 3rd at the 2022 State Meet. As a sophomore at the 1A State Track Meet, McNiven placed 3rd in the 3200 meters, 5th in the 1600 and 8th in the 800. The young man needless to say has a lot of talent.

The Burlington girls were 3rd in the 2A team standings this year in cross country and produced the individual medalist in Jessie Michaels. Last fall, she competed on the Huskie volleyball team but she had a solid 1A State Track Meet back in the spring with 2nd place finishes in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. She won Saturday's race by close to a minute and is poised to have a solid senior season when track rolls around.

We had a chance to talk to McNiven and Michaels after their respective races for their thoughts on the day and their distance running careers.
