Wyoming Sees 2nd Biggest Drop In Births
Childbirth is declining nationwide but it’s happening faster in Wyoming than in other parts of the country.
According to a recent study conducted by the team of analysts at Quote Wizard, they found births have declined by 7% since 2016 nationwide. Add it up and nearly 350,000 fewer children were born in 2020 than in 2016.
In Wyoming specifically, births are down 16% in Wyoming since 2016. That’s the 2nd largest decrease nationwide.
There were only 6,230 births in 2021 in Wyoming.
Over the last six years, births have declined in every year except one: 2021. That’s because the coronavirus pandemic had a unique effect on births. In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, fewer children were born than at any point in the last 36 years. However, in 2021, births went back up. We found that childbirth rates increased by nearly 2% between 2020 and 2021.
Along with Wyoming, the two other states that have the steepest declines in childbirth are Alaska and New Mexico. Alaska has seen the largest decline in childbirths over the last six years; it’s also the most expensive state to have a child in.
Societal trends, the economy, and lower infant mortality rates likely all play a role in why childbirth rates have been declining.
New Hampshire and Tennessee are the only states with an increase in the number of births.
