In the movie Moneyball, Brad Pitt's character, Billy Beane, says the phrase "How can you not be romantic about baseball?" Those words are absolutely true.

I've been a baseball fan my whole life. I can remember going to a St. Louis Cardinals game in 1982 with my Grandpa. I can remember the smell of his pipe (you could still smoke in stadiums then), I can still hear him yelling at the first baseman Keith Hernandez, and I can remember leaving the game early to beat the traffic. I can also remember getting into the car, turning the game on the radio, and hearing Darryl Porter hitting a game-winning home run.

Casper Spuds fans have had the opportunity to experience the romantic side of baseball over the last two nights.

Last night, the Spuds were again up against the ropes, and playing from behind in the bottom of the 9th. The Zap all but had this game won and were punching their bus ticket to Spearfish for the championship series.

Then the romantic, exciting, and magical side of baseball showed up.

The gritty Spuds were down by two runs heading into the bottom of the 9th, then the baseball magic showed up.

The Casper players were again in a childhood dream. Bottom of the 9th, down two runs, and the season is on the line. If they can rally, they're headed to Spearfish to face the reigning champs for the 2026 ILB Championship.

Man on second and third, no outs, and Hunter Stoncipher hits the ball to the second baseman, and he's thrown out, BUT Elijah Reeves scores. The score is now 4-3. Down 1, 1 out, and a man on third.

Caden Wilcox steps to the plate, with Hunter Billingsly standing on third. Wilcox drives a fly ball to left field, and it's down! Billingsly crosses the plate, and the game is tied, 4-4.

Wow, the excitement is in the air, and the comeback kids did it. After two more outs, we're headed to extra innings tied at 4.

Fast forward to the bottom of the 14th inning. Both teams are battling. The season is on the line. The loser goes home, and the winner is headed to Spearfish.

The Spuds' first batter is Ethan Schlotterback, and he hits a ball to a diving first baseman, puts his head down, and beats the throw.

Here comes that Spuds baseball magic moment.

No outs, with runners on first and second, speedster Trey Brooks comes to the plate and lays down a bunt. The runners are on the move. The pitcher fielded the ball and elected to throw it to third.

The throw to third is high and heads to the fence.

Ethan Schlotterback scrambles to his feet, runs the 90 feet, and crosses the plate to give the Casper Spuds another come-from-behind walk-off win. 5-4, and your Casper Spuds are headed to Spearfish to play for the league championship.

How can you not be romantic about baseball?

Congratulations to the Spuds organization on a hard-fought, come-from-behind display of baseball magic.

Good luck in Spearfish.
