During his lone season in the Bay Area, Gipson started all 17 regular-season games and three consecutive playoff outings, helping lead the 49ers to the NFC Championship game. The 6-foot-1, 212-pound Dallas native tallied 68 tackles, 0.5 sacks and three tackles for loss from the free safety spot. He also added a team-best five interceptions. That was tied for the second most in the NFL.

Gipson now has 32 interceptions during his 11-year career. He has spent time in Cleveland, Jacksonville, Houston and Chicago prior to signing with San Francisco last offseason. He was inked just 20 days before the season opener after original starter Jimmie Ward suffered a hamstring injury in training camp.

In 2014, Gipson was named an AFC Pro Bowler while a member of the Browns. Kyle Shanahan, the Niners' head coach, was the offensive coordinator in Cleveland that season.

Gipson's reported deal comes just hours before the opening of the NFL's early negotiating period, which opens Monday at 12 p.m. ET.

Gipson suited up in Laramie from 2008-11, playing both cornerback and safety under then head coach Dave Christensen. He registered 179 tackles, including eight for loss. He also picked off nine passes while playing alongside his brother Marcell Gipson from 2008-10.

University of Wyoming’s Top 50 Football Players

During the summer of 2021, 7220Sports.com counted down the Top 50 football players in University of Wyoming history, presented by Premier Bone & Joint Centers, Worthy of Wyoming.

The rules are simple: What was the player's impact while in Laramie? That means NFL stats, draft status or any other accolade earned outside of UW is irrelevant when it comes to this list.

This isn't a one-man job. This task called for a panel of experts. Joining 7220's Cody Tucker are Robert GagliardiJared NewlandRyan Thorburn, and Kevin McKinney.

We all compiled our own list of 50 and let computer averages do the work. Think BCS -- only we hope this catalog is fairer.
