LARAMIE -- University of Wyoming swimming and diving head coach Dave Denniston announced a promotion Friday. Sydney Buckley was bumped up to an assistant coach for the 2023-24 season.

“She’ll be able to work with athletes more, help them and build relationships with them,” Denniston said. “I think it’s going to make a big difference, especially when you look at our sprint group. We haven’t had a true sprint coach as part of our staff for a very long time, so to be able to do that and work on raw speed with our sprinters is something our team is looking forward to.”

Buckley worked with UW last season as a volunteer assistant coach. She also coaches with Team MPI – a conglomeration of endurance coaches from around the country that share ideas and lead athletes in various endurance endeavors.

Buckley has made various coaching stops over the years. She most recently was the head coach of the Torpedoes Swim Team in Manitou Springs, Colorado, for three years.

Prior to that stop, Buckley was a volunteer assistant coach at her alma mater, North Texas, for one season. She graduated from UNT with a degree in accounting.

Wyoming opens the season in a couple weeks. The Cowboys and Cowgirls compete in the Horsetooth Open Water Swim on Sept. 10 in Fort Collins, Colorado.
