LARAMIE -- Hank Gibbs doesn't just hold kicks.

In fact, the Cowboys' third-string quarterback isn't simply serving as a scout team signal caller, either. Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl reiterated Tuesday, the kid can play.

"The guy who's really made some great strides is Hank Gibbs," Bohl said when asked about the competition between Sean Chambers and Levi Williams. "He's the No. 3, but he's a tall angular guy and has put on some lean muscle mass.

"He's developing into a really, really good quarterback."

If you have been following this team at all over the last three seasons, you already know the value of having a third quarterback on the roster. In 2018, Tyler Vander Waal took over the dubious task of replacing Josh Allen. Nick Smith took a couple snaps, too. Chambers took over the starting role at Colorado State in late October.

The following year proved much of the same.

Chambers was under center for the Cowboys' first eight games before a leg injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Vander Waal got another shot. When it came to bowl time, true freshman Williams was at the helm in Tucson for the Pokes' 38-17 victory over Georgia State.

Despite COVID-19 stripping Wyoming of four regular-season games last fall -- and an additional two with cancelations from Utah State and Air force -- Bohl squad once again deployed a trio of quarterbacks.

Chambers was injured on the third play from scrimmage at Nevada. Williams took the reigns. A shoulder and hip ailment forced Williams to the sideline late in the season. Gavin Beerup came in for mop-up duty against New Mexico and Boise State.

So, who is this Gibbs guy?

The team's official website lists the freshman at 6-foot-5, 226 pounds. He's a native of Fayetteville, Arkansas. He's listed as a pro-style quarterback by Rivals.com and shows no stars behind his name. There are no other colleges with interest either, according to the recruiting site, though his Twitter account shows an offer from Tarleton State, Bryant, Indiana State and Eastern Kentucky.

Gibbs is also a legacy player in Laramie.

His father, Chris Gibbs, was a defensive end for the Cowboys from 1984-88.

Gibbs completed 72-of-127 passes for 1,002 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior in high school. He led his Bulldogs squad to a 10-3 record.

It appears Gibbs and Beerup will be yet another position battle to keep an eye on this fall.

"I'm not saying he's going to be in position to to jump over one of those two guys, but we're well pleased with his progress," Bohl said. "We put our quarterbacks under quite a bit of duress."
