On Tuesday Gov. Dave Freudenthal wrote a letter to the chairmen of the Legislature's Joint Appropriations Committee recommending a $250,000 General Fund appropriation for a memorial to honor veterans in Cody.

According to the letter the Wyoming Veterans Memorial Park Committee of Cody made a request for that amount to be supplemented by private donations.  The total cost of the project is $300,000. Freudenthal says VFW Post #2673 of Cody and the Wyoming Veterans Commission support the request.

Freudenthal joined with the Legislature in 2008 to support the construction of a Korean War Memorial and in 2009 to support the construction of a World War II Memorial.  In the letter he says:

"I am now asking for the Legislature to join me in supporting the construction of a memorial that will ensure the veterans who served and sacrificed in conflicts beyond those already memorialized are honored with the dignity and reverence we all know they deserve."

The memorial is meant to honor veterans who have served in military conflicts which have occurred since the Vietnam War.  The basic design will be a large half moon shaped concrete pad featuring a granite story board with granite pillars around the border.  The pillars will contain the names of those who died serving our country in such conflicts and there will be room for additional pillars to be added if necessary.
