Equine horse herpes virus 1 has been a growing concern in the last couple of weeks and it has officially been confirmed in Wyoming.

A previous outbreak of the virus caused many rodeos and other events to be cancelled due to the severity of the virus which can be transmitted through air and touch and can kill infected horses.

The first case of Equine Herpes Virus 1 has been officially recorded in Johnson County. The horse has been isolated from the rest of the horses on the property and the location is under quarantine. Another horse on the premises also had to be euthanized because of symptoms of the virus but tests have yet to confirm if the horse had the virus or not.

According to State Veterinarian Jim Logan, the case is not related to the outbreak that occurred in Ogden, Utah last month. The outbreak in Utah has spread across the western part of the country and also hit parts of Canada.

The virus has lead to the euthanizing of approximately a dozen horses. Since the outbreaks began Wyoming has tried to take all precautions necessary to prevent the spread of the virus through the state. It is required for all horses entering the state to be inspected by a veterinarian 72 hours prior to entering the state.
