LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers finally generated enough runs to win a game in the National League Championship Series.

The Dodgers are within two games to one in the series after Hyun-Jin Ryu (hyoon-jihn ree-OO') scattered three hits in seven innings of the Dodgers' 3-0 shutout of the St. Louis Cardinals. Ryu tossed no-hit ball for the first four innings, then worked out of a two-on, no-out jam in the fifth to preserve a 2-0 lead.

Dodgers starters have allowed just two earned runs in the series but had wasted those great pitching performances until Adrian Gonzalez sparked a two-run fourth. Gonzalez put Los Angeles ahead with an RBI double before scoring on Yasiel Puig's (YAH'-see-ul pweegz) triple. The Dodgers had been 1-for-17 with runners in scoring position and were scoreless in 23 consecutive innings until Gonzalez came through.

Hanley Ramirez capped the offense with an RBI single in the eighth, hours after being diagnosed with a fractured rib that caused him to miss Game 2. Ramirez, Puig and Mark Ellis each had two of the Dodgers' nine hits.

Cardinals starter and loser Adam Wainwright allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings for his first playoff loss. He entered the game 4-0 with a 2.03 ERA lifetime in the postseason.

The Cardinals finished the game without third baseman David Freese (freez), who experienced tightness in his right calf during the fifth inning. Freese recorded the Cardinals' first hit of the game before leaving.

Game 4 is Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

DETROIT (AP) — Monday was an off-day for the Tigers and Red Sox as the two teams prepare for Game 3 of the American League Championship Series in Detroit. The Tigers will send Justin Verlander to the mound today against Boston's John Lackey.

The Tigers could use the extra day to forget about Sunday night's 6-5 loss to the Red Sox. Detroit enjoyed a 5-1 lead in the eighth before David Ortiz erased it with one swing of the bat, launching a grand slam off Joaquin Benoit (wah-KEEN' BEHN'-wah). Jarrod Saltalamacchia (sahl-tah-lah-MAH'-kee-uh) won it with a single in the bottom of the ninth.

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball umpire Wally Bell has died less than a week after working the National League Division Series between St. Louis and Pittsburgh. He was 48.

Major League Baseball confirmed Bell's death Monday. He died of an apparent heart attack in his home state of Ohio.

Bell broke into the majors in 1993 and returned to the game after undergoing open heart surgery in 1999.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Orioles third baseman Manny Machado has undergone surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left knee. The 75-minute procedure included an arthroscopy and open reconstruction of the medial patellar femoral ligament. Recovery time is estimated to be around six months.
