Cowgirls Get a Shot at a Mountain West Title
This is an opportunity to send the Cowgirls’ senior class out with something that hasn’t happened in nearly 30 years.
Tonight from the Arena-Auditorium the Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team hosts Boise State on its Senior Night. The added drama is that UW has a chance at its first conference title since the 1989-90 season.
Senior Liv Roberts said getting a chance to play for a conference championship is super-exciting.
“That’s something I’ve been looking forward since I got recruited here, and that’s something that I always wanted. That’s something that we always did in high school, and so I kind of expected it when I came here, and I didn’t realize how hard it was to get a conference title in college. We’re excited to play for Friday (today), and it’ll be a fun one if we can cut down the nets after.”
It will be a challenge, as Wyoming faces Boise State, who is tied with the Cowgirls and UNLV at 13-4 atop the Mountain West. The Broncos have won six straight to get back into the title race with UW and the Rebels.
Wyoming (20-8, 13-4) won the first meeting earlier nearly two months ago in Boise, 66-51. They Cowgirls played a terrific defensive game and knocked down shots.
Boise State (19-9, 13-4) is led by sophomore Riley Lupfer, who averages 16.8 points per game. She’s been the MW Player of the Week three times this season.
It is also the final home game for the four Cowgirl seniors. Roberts, plus Natalie Baker, Marleah Campbell and Skyler Snodgrass will be recognized prior to the game.
Baker said it’s hard to believe it’s her final home game.
“It went by super-fast, I think, but we put ourselves in a great position to win a championship on your senior night, which is like a dream come true. You know, this is what you dream of coming in as a freshman, so we’re super-excited, and it’s going to be an amazing night regardless of what happens.”
The game starts at 6:30 p.m. in Laramie. Radio coverage on FM 95.1 (KCGY-FM) starts at 6 p.m.
