Behind Chaundra Sewell’s 11th double-double of the season, the Wyoming Cowgirls won their regular season finale 65-51 over the Colorado State Rams Wednesday night in Fort Collins. Sewell scored 22 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds to lead the way. UW jumped out to an early 21-4 lead and with the victory tied the mark for the best conference record in program history.

“Once again, it was a great team effort,” said head coach Joe Legerski. “When you win 23 games, it is about a team. We have had a number of players step up each and every night. Chaundra Sewell came up big with 22 points and 17 rebounds. Knowing that she had a double-double at half, we challenged her to match the first half performance. Ashley and Kayla played consistently and we had a number of players off the bench to help in this victory.”

The Wyoming Cowgirls (23-6, 12-4) had three players in in double-figures led by Sewell. She was 9-15 from the field and 4-6 from the charity stripe. Kayla Woodward followed with 13 points and six rebounds, while Ashley Sickles chipped in ten points. UW shot 26-51 (42.6%) from the field and out-rebounded the Rams, 46-26.

Colorado State (10-18, 6-9) was led by Meghan Heimstra with a game-high 32 points and seven blocked shots. The Rams shot 19-51 (37.3%) from the field and just 4-18 (22.2%) from beyond the arc.

After the quick start by Wyoming, Colorado State finally got going. The Rams began the game 0-10 from the field. Then out-scored UW 23-11 over the final 11:32 of the first half. Still, the Cowgirls took a 32-23 lead into the locker room.

Wyoming extended the lead back to double-figures to begin the second half, but CSU hung around. They eventually cut it to 52-45 with 5:29 left in the game, after an 11-2 spurt. A basket by Alison Gorrell ended a six minute field goal drought for Wyoming to get the lead back to nine, 54-45. UW held strong and won by 14 points.

The Cowgirls will now wait to see who their opponent will be for next week’s Reese’s Mountain West Championships. They are set to play on Thursday, March 14, at 9:30 p.m. You can listen to Wyoming Cowgirl basketball on KOWB. Radio coverage will start at 9 p.m. next Thursday.
