Cowgirl Volleyball Rolls in Conference Opener [VIDEO]
Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball won their Mountain West opener at San Jose State Thursday night with a dominant 3-0 sweep.
The Cowgirls beat the Spartans for the seventh consecutive match and won by a sweep for sixth-straight time. The scores were 25-19, 25-16, and 25-17.
Wyoming (9-4, 1-0) had 14 team blocks and held San Jose State to a .018 hitting percentage. Jackie McBride had a career-high tying eight blocks, while Reed Copeland finished with six. Madi Fields and Halie McArdle registered double figures in digs with 15 and 13, respectively.
From an offensive standpoint, UW was led by Emily Lewis with seven kills, while McArdle added six.
After a slow start, a 13-2 run helped the Cowgirls take the first set. They trailed 7-4 early in set two but raced past San Jose State with a 21-9 run. Wyoming led from start to finish in the third and final set and won by eight.
The Cowgirls return home Saturday against Nevada at 1 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
It’s also the start of conference play for Wyoming Cowgirl soccer this weekend, as they are on the road for a pair of matches.
Wyoming (5-1-2) has their most non-conference victories since 2012, but this will be a difficult start.
The Cowgirls open at San Diego State Friday at 8 p.m. Then they travel to Albuquerque to face New Mexico Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Wyoming head coach Pete Cuadrado says they’ll discover a lot about themselves on this trip.
“We’ll find out if we’re gonna be one of the top teams or not. We open up at San Diego State Friday night, then we’ve got to fly on Saturday to Albuquerque, play there on Sunday, and those are two of the top teams in our conference, so we’ve got our hands full.”
The Cowgirls will be back on the road in MW play next weekend, as well.
Cowgirl Swimming and Diving
The Wyoming Cowgirls opened their season early on Thursday with a dual win at Northern Colorado over the Bears, 155-to-145.
UW won seven of the 16 events with victories in freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, and they swept both boards of diving, as senior Peyton GrandPre had the top score for both 1-meter and 3-meter.
The Wyoming Cowgirls will host the Wyoming Invite Friday through Sunday at the UW Tennis Complex. Air Force, Colorado State, and Central Oklahoma will also be participating in the three-day event.
