Wyoming Cowgirls soccer fell from the ranks of the unbeaten last weekend. They tied Montana at home before losing at Iowa.

Wyoming (2-1-1) played to a 1-1 draw versus the Grizzlies last Friday at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. The Cowgirls scored in the 57th minute on Michaela Stark’s first career goal off an assist by Annika Clayton. Montana came back to tie it in the 87th minute.

Head coach Pete Cuadrado said in a university release, “I felt we didn’t give away much the entire game, but Montana had one golden opportunity and took advantage of it.”

Sunday, UW lost at Iowa by a final of 3-2. The Cowgirls surrendered two goals in the final 13 minutes of the match and suffered their first defeat of this season.

Katie Marcheso scored both goals. She scored unassisted in the 36th minute and tied the match at 1-1. Her penalty kick goal in the 74th minute put the Cowgirls ahead 2-1. The Hawkeyes responded with a pair of goals in a six minute span.

“It’s a very tough loss,” head coach Pete Cuadrado said in a UW release. “This one hurts a lot. To have a 2-1 lead with 13 minutes left in regulation and lose 3-2 is tough. I thought we played pretty well for the first 70 minutes. Unfortunately, you have to play 90 and we had a few mental lapses that cost us the game. Hopefully we learn from this one and it makes us better.”

Wyoming returns to the pitch Friday with a match at UTEP. They follow that with a road game at New Mexico State next Sunday.
