Cowboys Face the Cougars in the Poinsettia Bowl [VIDEOS]
It’s game day for the Wyoming Cowboys. They take on the BYU Cougars in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl at 7 p.m.
Wyoming and BYU will be meeting for the 78th time on a football field, but for the first time since 2010. This is the first ever bowl game between the two teams.
The Pokes are 8-5 on the season and will play a 14th game for the first time in school history.
BYU enters at 8-4 on the year and haven’t played since a season-ending victory over Utah State on Nov. 26.
Both teams have been preparing for just over two weeks for this game. Cowboys head coach Craig Bohl knows it’s a difficult match-up with the Cougars.
One change of note is at quarterback for BYU. Starter Taysom Hill was injured in their win over the Aggies and won’t play in this game. That means Tanner Magnum will start. He was the starter last season after Hill was Hurt. Coach Bohl knows that will slightly alter the way the Cougars play.
In their eight wins, Wyoming’s been effective running the football, but they come off a game in the Mountain West Championship, where UW was inconsistent in that regard. Now the Cowboys face a BYU defense that is seventh in the nation against the run. The Cougars surrender just over 108 yards per game.
The series between these two rivals goes back to 1922. BYU has won seven straight over Wyoming, and the Cougars are 8.5 point favorites.
The Cowboys have a 6-7 all-time record in bowl games and are appearing in their first bowl game since 2011. UW’s last win in a bowl game was in 2009.
The 2016 Poinsettia Bowl will start at 7 p.m. from San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium.
