Cowboy Basketball Picked Near the Bottom of the MW for 2019-20
After struggling last season and losing All-Mountain West selection Justin James, not much is expected of the Wyoming Cowboys in the upcoming 2019-2020 season.
The Pokes were selected 10th out of 11 teams in the Preseason MW Men’s Basketball Poll released Tuesday at MW Men’s Basketball Media Day in Las Vegas.
Wyoming received 36 points in the balloting by media members that cover the conference. Only San Jose State was picked behind the Cowboys. UW finished with an overall record of 8-24 last season.
Utah State was chosen to win the league title in a unanimous vote. The Aggies received all 17 first-place votes.
San Diego State was selected second, followed by New Mexico, Nevada, and Boise State in the top five. Then it’s Fresno State, with UNLV, Air Force, and Colorado State ahead of UW.
No Cowboys is on the Preseason All-MW team. That’s comprised of Utah State’s Sam Merrill and Neemias Queta, Nico Carvacho of CSU, Boise State’s Derrick Alston, and Lavelle Scottie from Air Force.
Merrill was chosen as the Preseason Player of the Year. San Diego State junior guard Malachi Flynn was selected Preseason Newcomer of the Year. Tabbed to be the Preseason Freshman of the Year was Nevada forward K.J. Hymes.
