A 29-year-old Cheyenne man has been sentenced to 25 to 30 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl.

Duane L. Jackson, who was convicted of first-degree sexual assault of a minor in April, was sentenced Friday morning in Laramie County District Court.

"The jury got it wrong," said Jackson's attorney Marci Linde, who asked Judge Thomas Campbell to "suspend sentencing and put him on probation."

"I did not do this," said Jackson. "I will appeal this conviction."

But prosecuting attorney Tillie Routh argued against probation, asking that the court hold Jackson "accountable to the highest level."

"She's a little girl who's already been robbed of a normal childhood," said Routh. "She's still terrified that this is going to happen again."

"The impact on the young child can not be overstated," said Judge Campbell, who found that Jackson was "not a candidate for probation."

Jackson was facing a minimum of 25 years and a maximum of 50 years in prison.

Jackson's brother, 28-year-old Victor E. Jackson, is jailed awaiting trial on four counts of first-degree sexual assault, strangulation and domestic battery.
