WASHINGTON (AP) — Dick Cheney says Republicans need to look to a new generation of leaders as the party deals with poor approval ratings following the government shutdown.

The former vice president tells ABC's "This Week" that Republicans have faced challenges before and it's healthy for the party to work to rebuild. He says Republicans need to have "first-class" candidates and look to its strategy and a new generation.

He predicts that his daughter, Liz Cheney, will win her Republican Senate primary challenge in Wyoming next year against the incumbent, fellow Republican Mike Enzi.

Cheney says Enzi has received the majority of his campaign money from Washington, D.C.-based political groups. He says, "Washington is not going to elect the next senator from Wyoming."
