Check The Pressure Before Hitting The Road
If we all kept our tires properly inflated, collectively this country could save 1.2 billion gallons of gasoline a year. That statistic comes from the Vice President of the Rubber Manufacturers Association, Dan Zielinski.
With gas prices hovering around $3.50 in Wyoming, travel can be expensive. As the summer travel season kicks off this weekend, Zielinski urges motorists to practice good tire maintenance. He says ignoring your tires means poor gas mileage and early replacement.
“You might wear them out in a year you might wear them out in two years, but the bottom line is your gonna spend more money on tires by buying more of them than you otherwise should have to.”
Zielinski recommends checking your tire pressure monthly.
He says don’t go by the maximum pressure on the tire sidewall, but rather check the label usually on the driver’s side door.
Under inflation creates excess wear and tire that can lead to failure.
Significant over inflation, of 5 lbs or more, makes tires more susceptible to road hazard damage, wears down the center of your tire, and creates handling issues.
